Lambeth Conference 2008 Blog

20 weeks to go!

The Conference is getting very close now!

We have a new member of the team - Emily - who has come on board to help us manage the office here in London and the registration process for bishops and spouses. What joy to have a fourth pair of hands!

26 weeks to go!

This week I have been a little too busy for my liking. Admittedly, I don't like being busy at all.....

On Tuesday we discussed the production of a resource for hosts and guests during the pre-Lambeth Conference hospitality initiative. This will give a few guidelines on cross-cultural hospitality. The team here had a meeting with Affinity Events for much of Wednesday, catching up on the nuts and bolts of conference planning.

Happy New Year and welcome to the Lambeth Conference year!!

We're all back in the office after a good Christmas break, feeling rather nervous about the fast-approaching conference....but usually excited too.

30 weeks to go!

I am feeling slightly sheepish after failing to update you for weeks - again!

The main reason is that I've been spending every waking minute getting Spouses' Conference registration and Lambeth Conference registration stage two up and running. It all seemed a little harder than it should have been.....but we're more or less there now so I feel able to write blog entries again!

41 weeks to go!

I have just returned from a week's holiday in sunny Cornwall. Now sitting in rainy London, with the Lambeth Conference countdown clock ticking away, it feels like a rather sudden return to reality!

Sue is also just back from work in Hong Kong and Boston, USA.

It has been a productive week so far, with sucessful communications and conference programme meetings.

43 weeks to go!

I am all alone in the office today.

Sue is working in Hong Kong this week and then in Boston next week. David has meetings with various people involved in the conferences in Canterbury today.

The work towards the next stage of registration is ongoing - not as quick as we'd like but progress is being made.

48 weeks to go!

It's very quiet in the office this week, except for the sound of the incessant pouring rain outside! Lots of colleagues are either overseas working or on holiday.

I've been spending a lot of time looking back over resolutions made at the Lambeth Conferences in 1998 and 1988. At the moment, you can only look at these in long list form. So we're trying to produce a 'reader-friendly' record.

50 weeks (less than a year!!) to go!

Blog entries have been a bit few and far between as I've been out of the office unwell for what seems like ages. Hope you haven't all been too desperate for news!

August is usually a quiet month in English workplaces. Lots of people from our office are on holiday. Sue, David and I are still pretty busy keeping an eye on all the conference registrations and other business but it's nice to get on with it all when the sun's shining and the office is peaceful!

I am back from holidays to find online registration for bishops is now merrily up and running.

It's strangely encouraging to note how many people are as prone to silly mistakes as I am - and have managed to look at the front page of this web site without noticing the link to the online bishops' registration form.

For any of you still confused - go to the front page, where you should see an orange/gold coloured box (top right hand corner) advertising registration. Just click on this and you are taken direct to the registration form. Simple!

55 weeks to go!

There has been an incredible amount of rain this week, even for England. Flooding has been a problem in many areas, with many homes and workplaces damaged.

The company creating our online conference registration package - Quba - is based in Sheffield, one of the worst hit cities. Its staff have endured various powercuts and were evacuated from their offices at one point. A bit of an adventure but they've managed to keep working on our project. More rain to come this weekend, apparently....

57 weeks to go!

I seem to have spent most of the week doing data-entry. What joy!

Online registration is now almost ready to 'go live' but before it does we need to:

  • send out another postal mailing to all bishops invited to the Lambeth Conference
  • get all the wording for the online registration forms ready
  • finish our new website
  • update contact records for more than 800 bishops from around the world

59 weeks to go!

Online registration for the Lambeth Conference will go 'live' this month, so we're working hard to get the new web site complete and the online registration forms written. These things always take longer than you'd expect but, once done, will make so much difference.

61 weeks to go!

The Lambeth Conference office was occupied with one task for much of last week : updating the records of all our bishops' (and their spouses') names and contact details. Not much fun but certainly necessary!

64 weeks to go!

After a successful visit to Canterbuy last week, David and I have more or less finalised which rooms on the University of Kent campus will be needed for the Lambeth Conference. Almost all of them!

Sue is meeting bishops and their people in Congo this week, accompanied by Anglican Communion Office Secretary General Kenneth Kearon. Thankfully, both their visas were obtained in time for the flight on Friday afternoon...

Since planning for the Lambeth Conference began, those involved felt that it's important for each province of the Anglican Communion to have chance to share their country's hopes and concerns and voice opinions about the conference. Hence the trip to Congo, and many other visits that have taken place in recent months.
