Hospitality

Hospitality LogoThe Lambeth Conference 2008 began with a warm welcome.

The Design Group and the Archbishop of Canterbury wanted everyone coming to Canterbury from overseas for the conference to be cared for properly by the host nations (England, Scotland and Wales.)

All bishops and spouses from around the world were offered a long weekend of hospitality in the dioceses before the conference begins (approx. July 10 to 15).

This Hospitality Initiative was co-ordinated by the Church of England’s Partnership for World Mission (PWM), by locally appointed diocesan co-ordinators, airport chaplains and volunteer airport welcome teams.

Warm hospitality set the tone for the conference itself, time of relaxation and fellowship before getting down to ‘business’ in Canterbury and developed the sense of being a global communion.

Guests coming to partake in hospitality were offered:

  • welcome and greeting at the destination airport
  • transport to the host’s home
  • plenty of time for relaxation and fellowship
  • a ‘cultural’ experience of the host diocese/province
  • chance to share in the life of a local church community
  • a diocesan event at which senior clergy could greet one another
