Sermon given by the Archbishop of Canterbury at the Concluding Eucharist of the Lambeth Conference

‘We are witnesses,’ says Peter in our reading from Acts, ‘of what Jesus did in Judea, Jerusalem and Galilee’ (10.39). We have a story to tell.  But to be ‘witnesses’ can, at first, sound almost as if it’s not strong enough or particular enough. Witnesses get called in law suits;  they’re bystanders very often, who can tell you what happened.  It could be almost anybody.  But the apostolic witness is something different.

A Biblical Reflection

Our meditation this morning is the first in the month of August, for our Lambeth gathering being the first one in the first decade of the new millennium. A Biblical Reflection

Much has been written about the immense faith of Martha and Mary, both of whom truly believed that her brother would not have passed away had our Lord been present with them, and of our Lord’s declaration to Martha that “I am the resurrection and the live; he who believes in my, though he die, yet shall he live, and whoever lives and believes in me shall never die.”

A Biblical Reflection

The Good Shepherd lays down his life for his sheep but the hired servant, the mercenary runs for his life and abandons the sheep when he sees the wolf attacking the flock because the sheep do not belong to him. It is not always easy to be a good shepherd. It can be a strenuous, draining ministry and the only way we can be faithful shepherds is by sitting at the feet of Jesus, the Good Shepherd.
