Particularly delighted by the solidarity that has been shown in this morning’s walk, which I think has been a memorable experience. Mathilde Nkwirikiye Ntahoturi from Burundi shared the story of her work with orphaned and abandoned babies informally at the Spouses’ Conference. Mathilde, who is a lawyer and is married to the Archbishop of Burundi, the Most Revd Bernard Ntahoturi, said that her heart was touched by the plight of the many motherless children aged 0-5.
The Archbishop of Canterbury Dr Rowan Williams today promised to begin the process to have youth representation on the Archbishops’ Council. Dr Williams was responding to a challenge from young people who were reporting from last week’s “The Lambeth Walk”, an international youth event in the Diocese of Leicester.
“No voice is too big, too small, or too mediocre” to be heard, said the Archbishop of Capetown, the Most Revd Thabo Makgoba, who is responsible for bringing the concept of the Indaba discussion groups to the Lambeth Conference.
Vocation was under the spotlight in today’s spouses’ plenary. The session was introduced by Thomas Bair (the husband of the Bishop of Rhode Island, USA, Geralyn Wolf) - the first time a male spouse took the stage in the Spouses’ Conference.

The importance of the Family in everyone’s lives was at the centre of a session for members of the Spouses Conference chaired by Bronwyn Fryar, the wife of the Bishop of Rockhampton in Australia.
Many of the Lambeth spouses are like the boy with the bunch of bananas on his head who accepted a lift but didn't put down the fruit - because although they have left some of their burdens at home, many carry some burdens with them. So began a session on storytelling in the spouses’ conference.
Jane Williams launched the book ‘Marriage, Mitres and Myself’ on Thursday 17 July at the Lambeth Conference. The Sports Hall, which has been transformed into the Spouses Venue, was filled with the members of the Spouses Conference and their spouses – the Bishops!
The bishops of the Lambeth conference will enter into retreat today, continuing a practice as ancient as Christianity itself.
The Spouses Conference opened today as the delegates gathered for the first time. The 550 or so spouses are meeting in the huge sports hall which has been transformed into an attractive café style meeting room to facilitate the conversation.
